We recommend Tara to all lovers of untouched nature, especially to those who like long walks, rafting, and horseback riding…
Drvengrad "Wooden city"
Drvengrad , the ethno-village of Emir Kusturica, is located between two beautiful mountains, Zlatibor and Tara. It was founded and constructed on the hill Mećavnik after the idea of the film director, Emir Kusturica, for filming the movie “Life is a Miracle”. Mecavnik is situated above the village Mokra Gora and it is on the same altitude as the railway station Jatare that host narrow gauge railway track called “Sarganska osmica” (Sargan eight).
There is a square in the central part of the village tiled with wooden cubes and cut wooden brinks, surrounded with cottages. There is a church, a library, “Underground” cinema, restaurant of national cuisine, art gallery, coffee shop and souvenir shop in the village.
The streets are named after the prominent figures of culture, sport and science. The Expert Jury of the Brussels Foundation for Architecture Philippe Rotthier proclaimed Kusturica's Drvengrad, the best architectural work in the past three years in Europe .
Zlatibor is situated in western Serbia , about 230 km away from Belgrade . The main road connects Belgrade and the coast line across Zlatibor. There are many cultural, historical and ethnological monuments and attractions in the proximity of Zlatibor, the altitude of which is about 1000 meters.
The Museum under the open sky called “ Old Village ” is actually an authentic village from the 19 th century. Until 1974, one of the most beautiful railroads in the world was passing by Zlatibor, over Mokra Gora. This train has been put into operation again, and represents a tourist attraction. The steam locomotive breaks through rocky narrows and ruts and travels on an unusual route forming a line in the shape of number 8, which is why it is called the “Shargan eight”.
Zlatibor is the mountain of extraordinary beauty. Large clearings, lush pastures, mountain streams and a nice climate, make this mountain one of the most beautiful in Serbia . The climate of Zlatibor is therapeutic for bronchial asthma and other allergic diseases. There is a renowned Institute for treatment of thyroid gland related illnesses, on the mountain.
